Sponsorship & Loans

A useful starting point for information on Sponsorship and Loans is your local British Council office, or the Direct.gov website.

Loans for UK Residents

Loans for maintenance are granted to those resident in the UK for three years directly through Student Finance England.

All online applications must be made through the Direct.gov website.

Loans for EU Nationals

If you are a national of the European Union, you are eligible to apply for a non-means tested Tuition Fee Support Loan of £6000 per year towards your undergraduate tuition fees. Make your application to Student Finance England as soon as you have secured a place on the degree course.

Nationals of non-EU countries resident in the UK may also qualify for support and should contact the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) to determine whether funding from this source will be available to them, including assessment for a student loan.

New Student Applications

  • Find out what student finance is available to you and apply online now! It’s the simplest and fastest way to ensure everything is in place in time for starting your course.
  • You don’t need to have accepted a place at university or college to apply for student finance.
  • When you apply, remember your application isn’t complete, and cannot be assessed, until all the information needed is provided. In most cases, the evidence needed can be provided easily by filling in the appropriate details on the online application.
  • If you are disabled or have children or adult dependants, you can apply for non-repayable grants.
  • Visit www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information and to apply. There is also a series of ‘How to’ videos to help you.

Continuing Student Applications

Continuing students who have applied previously and received a loan for non-means tested finance will, for the next academic period, be processed by Student Finance England automatically if your circumstances haven't materially changed. You will simply need to sign and return the form you will receive from Student Finance England.
